Mind the <scp>GAP</scp> —But make it better: Improving the U.S. Gap Analysis Project's protected‐area classification system to better reflect biodiversity conservation

چکیده
Protected areas are foundational to the conservation of biological diversity, and many scientists have called for increased protections in face current extinction climate-change crises. Currently United States, most recognized way track amount protected land is Gap Analysis Project classification system, which we argue deficient three ways: it does not, a systematic way, specify typical uses constraints associated with each designation; not fine-tuned or nuanced enough distinguish levels protection among designations within “protected” “unprotected” that allow quite different human activities; largely ignores durability designations, failing account an area's vulnerability downsizing, downgrading, degazetting. We propose new system address these deficiencies demonstrate this method several common federal States.

Make it better but don't change anything
With massive amounts of data being generated in electronic format, there is a need in basic science laboratories to adopt new methods for tracking and analyzing data. An electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) is not just a replacement for a paper lab notebook, it is a new method of storing and organizing data while maintaining the data entry flexibility and legal recording functions of paper note...
متن کاملDo green products make us better people?
Consumer choices reflect not only price and quality preferences but also social and moral values, as witnessed in the remarkable growth of the global market for organic and environmentally friendly products. Building on recent research on behavioral priming and moral regulation, we found that mere exposure to green products and the purchase of such products lead to markedly different behavioral...

BACKGROUND TO THE DEBATE A variety of biomedical technologies are being developed that can be used for purposes other than treating disease. Such "enhancement technologies" can be used to improve our appearance and regulate our emotions, with the goal of feeling "better than well." While these technologies can help people adapt to their rapidly changing lifestyles, their use raises important et...

متن کاملInspiratory muscle training in difficult to wean patients: work it harder, make it better, do it faster, makes us stronger
Weaning from prolonged mechanical ventilation is a complex, time-consuming process that involves the loss of force/generating capacity of the inspiratory muscle. In their study 'Inspiratory muscle strength training improves the outcome in failure to wean patients: a randomized trial', Martin and colleagues showed that the use of an inspiratory muscle strength program increased the maximal inspi...
